Abstract
:
Ibn Sina College (ISC) is the first private College of Medicine established in Saudi Arabia in 2004 and is licensed by the Saudi Ministry Of Higher Education. ISC has been specifically created to help in meeting the rapidly increasing demands for highly qualified doctors and health care professionals in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The main goal of ISC is to graduate individuals who are confident, motivated, articulate and capable of making rational decisions in their personal and professional lives to serve their fellow citizens and contribute to the continual advances of health services in the Kingdom. With this goal in mind, the advisory Committee of the College selected King Abdullah Ressearch and Consulting Institute at King Saud University (KARCI-KSU) to develop the currriculum of the program of Medicine as the latter proposed an innovative approach to the education of health professionals including but not limited to the strategies of integrated learning of basic and clinical sciences, problem-based learning and community oriented education (SPICES MODEL). In the (SPICES Model) the main educational strategy is that the student is the center of the learning process. Other strategies include: the integration of learning of basic and clinical sciences, the PBL approach to learning, community orientation at an early stage, inclusion of special study modules and standardization of learning of clinical skills. ISC Program of Medicine is a six years program with three sequential phases: Phase I (Inttroduction to Basic Medical Sciences), Phase II (Clinically oriented Basic Medical Sciences) and Phase III (Clinical Clerkship). The Curriculum map will be presented to show the details. Moreover, teaching strategies to achieve the curriculum goals will be discussed with examples.
