Abstract
:
Islam's approach to man's economic life, as a means to some higher ends, should be reflected in the teaching of economics. A preview of the goals of economic activity in an Islamic society with emphasis on need fulfillment and lessening of inequalities, is necessary. In the context of basic assumptions, profit maximization is not acceptable as the only motive, nor the market as the only mechanism. The author recommends teaching distribution of wealth and income before discussing production and consumption in a course of microeconomic analysis. Hierarchy in human needs and socially conscious behaviour on the part of producers are some of the new topics introduced in the analysis.
