Abstract
:
Owners of buildings subjected to fire often make a hasty decision to demolish their buildings and start all over again. This is due primarily to the severe conditions of burned-out nonstructural elements after the fire is extinguished. However, most reinforced concrete buildings subjected to fire could be repaired at a cost much less than building new ones. The extent ofdamage to reinforced concrete structures depends on several factors, e.g. the highest temperature reached at concrete surface, fire duration, the geometric shape and thickness of structural elements and the type and properties of the combustible materials that existed on the structure. The extent of damage to each portion of the structure could be determined based on a carefully planned and detailed site as well as laboratory testing program. Repairs can then be ordered based on the results of the detailed investigation. This study describes the steps followed in a recent case study in which a reinforced concrete structure was subjected to intense but short fire. It outlines the method used in field investigation studies, non-destructive as well as laboratory testing. The testing program included ultrasound, Schmitt hammer, concrete core, damaged reinforcing steel testing and field load testing of a portion of the damaged structure. It also outlines the program used for repairing the various portions of the structure based on their loeation and the extent of their damage.
