Abstract
:
A Growth Center Strategy basically relies upon choosing settlements as targets for investments, which vary according to the potential for contributions to overall development. This would avoid duplicity in local, regional and national projects. A Growth Center Strategy for the Kingdom was initiated for the Third Development Plan (1400-1405 A.H). However, it was never implemented and it has been recurring as a pivotal aspect of regional planning. It was included as part of the strategy for the Fifth Development Plan (1410-1415 A.H.). This study aims at providing an overview of the main challenges for Growth Center Strategies. It starts by giving a summary of the importance of that strategy for regional planning, then it looks at the formal commitment to that strategy. This is followed by a review of the different challenges beginning with the nomenclature, the economic aspects, and the administrative aspects.
