Dramatic advancements in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and computer technologies have resulted in a much wider availability of rich-knowledge GIS digital vector maps; these are now easily accessible and immediately downloadable for anyone with access to the internet. This has, however, led to the need to develop better copyright protection systems to protect the rights of the producers and original owners of these maps. Similarly, the detection of illegal modifications is also an urgent requirement, both to protect developers' rights and prevent errors in use.
The effective use of watermarking techniques can protect the rights of those who own the data and highlight any illegal changes. This thesis thus focuses on the less commonly explored topic of vector-map data to propose a suitable and effective combination of vector-map algorithms and watermarking techniques, a Principal Least Significant Bits (LSB) and Linear Cellular Automata Transform (LCAT) grouping that ensures the authenticity of data being transmitted within a system, increasing the level of security of data received. Emphasis is thus placed on geometric and signal approaches, with a new technique being offered for the watermarking of digital vector maps based on LCAT. This technique involves LCA-transforming the original map to ensure that the watermark-insertion process is conducted on the coefficient of the transformation result frequency within the LSB pattern. This in turn demands that the watermarked map is obtained using an inverse LCA transformation for each LCA-transformed map.
The research first offers an overview of vector-map copyright protection and several techniques used in this area. The main aim of the proposed watermarking vector map scheme proposed in this thesis is to demonstrate the efficiency of the technique, and the results produced are supportive of this in general; however, a few less effective edge cases remain that offer opportunities for further future research. The level of degradation within individual LSB and LCAT systems is likewise assessed, again with promising results. Finally, the robustness of the watermarking scheme is evaluated, with results supporting the robust performance of the proposed watermarking techniques.
