Background: Pesticides show toxic effect in humans when ingested in high quantity and may lead to acute as well as chronic diseases, depending up on the nature of pesticide to which person exposed. In order to protect human from pesticide toxic effects, WHO recommend maximum residue limits (MRL).
Objective: In context of current background, current study aimed to analyze the different pesticide concentrations in vegetables, fruits and foods from Jeddah City, Saudi Arabia.
Materials and methods: We analyzed 50 samples of Date fruit whole, Date fruit paste, Rice, Oats, Green grapes, Okra. Bean, Cucumber, Aubergine, Coriander, Lettuce, Spinach, Parsley, Blueberry, Pistachio, grape peels, Basil, Spices, Mehran spice, Guava, Mango. Ajwa date fruit, Strawberry, Apple, Rocca leaf, Mint and Olive oil purchased from different supermarkets between June 2020 to October 2020. Thirtytwo different pesticides namely Acetamipride, Aldicarb-sulfone, Azoxystrobin, Boscalid, Buprofezin, Carbendazim, Chlormequat chloride, Chlorpyrifos, Clothianidin, Cyprodinil, Difenoconazole isomer 1, Difenoconazole isomer 2, Dimethoate, Ethion, Hexaconazole, Hexythiazox, Imidacloprid, Indoxacarb, Metalaxyl, Metalaxyl-M, Methomyl, Omethoate, Penconazole, Propiconazole, Pyridaben, Pyriproxyfen, Tebuconazol, Tebufenpyrad, Thiamethoxam, Tricyclazole, Trifloxystrobin and Triflumuron were detected by using liquid chromatography-tandem-mass-spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) with multi-residue method (the QuEChERS-method).
Results: Result was repeated twice. Out of 50 samples, pesticides concentration was above RML in most of the sample. Concentration of pesticides in parsley, oats, dates and green grapes were significantly higher than MRL value. Acetamipride, chlormequat chloride, carbendazim, thiamethoxam, boscalid, hexaconazole, chlorpyrifos, imidacloprid, pyrimethanil, tebuconazol, and thiamethoxam were the most frequently detected pesticides with high concentration above MRL. Selected LC-MS/MS chromatograms of all 31 pesticides discussed in manuscript.
Conclusion: On the basis of our results, we recommend the establishment of a government mediated program for the monitor of pesticide concentrations in fruits, vegetables, and other processed foods for public health safety. |
