Abstract
:
Background: about two millions women around the world suffer from breast cancer recently. Women should be aware about early detection methods of breast cancer. Breast self-examination (BSE) is an effective tool used regularly in order to early discover any abnormality in the breasts. BSE reflects personal behavior to promote their health. Aim: Assess awareness and practice of breast self – examination among female university students using health believe model Study Design: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used. Setting: Faculty of Nursing at King Abdulaziz University. Sample: A total of 187 nursing students constituted the study sample. Results: Participants’ had high level of awareness about BSE with poor practice. The overall participants’ attitude using health believe model (HBM) was positive. Conclusion: Generally, women who practice BSE every month are more likely to be familiar with any changes in their breast. High level of awareness was prevalent among the participants. Unlike the practice of BSE which found to be poor and irregularly. Recommendation: The study recommended that further research be undertaken using a large sample size in the areas of BSE in combination with health believe model in order to define main predicators of attitude of BSE among Saudi females. Longitudinal studies are recommended to confirm role of BSE in improvement of breast cancer outcome and decrease mortality rates.
